Ruthless Lola

Run Lola Run By Taylor

In the film Run Lola Run Directed by Tom Tykver the main character Lola is memorable because she is a strong-willed and passionate character who will go to great lengths to save her loved one. This is shown using a number of techniques.

The first feature that the director uses to make the main character memorable is colour. The colour red is used to show the importance of the main character Lola. Lola’s bright red hair stands out in every scene especially because of the contrast it has with the grey and gloomy city of Munich which the film is set in.  A good example of this is the robbery scene when Lola Comes running out of the bank. The camera zooms right out and shows the whole scene. Everyone is looking at Lola and the scene instantly comes to a stand still. Amidst all the chaos Lola stands out like no other character in the film.

The second feature Tykver employs to make Lola memorable is the music. It is fast paced and energised just like Lola’s running. This technique enhances the sense of urgency and determination in Lola’s actions. It is also used to build and release tension. Tykver changes the speed and style of music to suit the situation. For example when Lola and Manni rob the supermarket the music is techno and fast paced but when they make their getaway jazz music comes in and slows the pace right down. The use of music reinforces Lola’s emotions and actions and makes the audience connect with Lola.

Another feature the director uses is camera movement to make Lola memorable. The camera technique tracking is extensively used to follow Lola and show the audience the determination and loyalty she has for Manni. Wherever Lola goes the camera is right by her side following her step by step on her important journey. The tracking technique also enhances her speed and stamina when she is running through the streets of Munich. The camera also jumps between different camera angles to make the scene even busier than it already is. The audience feels tired just watching the lengths Lola is willing to go to when saving Manni in time.

The last feature used to make Lola memorable is film quality. Whenever Lola or Manni are in a scene it is filmed in high definition (HD) to make them stand out and make other characters seem insignificant. When only supporting characters are on screen they are filmed in low definition which makes the film look grainy and dull. The director uses this to great effect when Lola is running to her father’s office. The film cuts back and forth between Lola’s exciting running and her father’s boring conversation in his office. When watching Lola the colours are bright and clear, the contrast is sharp and detailed. However when watching her dad the colours are pasty and flat, there is no contrast and the whole scene is grey. When Lola bursts through the door the whole scene becomes vibrant and alive. This instantly tells the audience the film is all about her and Manni and no one else.

The combination of colour, music, camera movement and film quality make the film fast paced, diverse and engaging. Together these techniques make Lola a very memorable character in the film.
